Tricker's are built to last a lifetime, so it's worth getting the size right first time. The tricky part is that their lasts vary, and several run larger than you'd expect. These notes come from fitting Tricker's shoes and boots over many years.
What width are Tricker's?
Tricker's use numbers for width rather than letters. Most of their shoes and boots are a 5 fitting, which is roughly the same as a standard F in other English shoes. A 6 fitting is wider, about the same as a G, and some styles can be made to order in it.
Tricker's lasts and how they fit
- 4497s (the Stow and other country boots): close to standard British sizing, with a little extra room for thicker socks. Most people take their normal size.
- 4444 (the Bourton country brogue): runs about half a size large. If you're a UK 8, try a 7.5.
- 6038L (the Henley toe-cap Oxford): true to size, in 5 and 6 fittings.
- 2161 (the Chepstow jodhpur boot): true to size, but can feel shallow over the top of the foot.
- W2298 (the Robert plain Derby): true to size and a good all-round fit.
- 4537 (the Piccadilly brogue and the 1829 collection): true to size, with slightly more toe room than many town lasts.
- 2004: runs about half a size small. Size up unless you have a very slim foot.
- 5402R (the Monkey boots and shoes): not generous. Go up half a size.
What about wide feet?
The Stow in a 6 fitting is one of the best answers we know for a wide foot that wants a proper country boot. See our guide to the best shoes for wide feet.
Breaking in Tricker's
Tricker's country shoes use heavy leathers and stiff soles, so they feel firm at first. Expect a few weeks of wear before they soften. A little heel slip in a new pair is normal and settles as the sole starts to flex. Pain across the toes isn't normal, so if they pinch there, the size or last is wrong.
Tip: for Tricker's boots, try them on with the socks you'll actually wear. A thick winter sock can be the difference between two sizes.
